SoPYC’s Pelican team, Miles and Ophelia Beck, sailed Ogopogo at the 2024 Pelican Power Up Training Regatta hosted by EFYC. Fifteen teams of sailors participated in two days of training and racing, experiencing everything from powerful gusts to complete lulls.

The stormy second day was salvaged by Paul Eldrid of One Sails, who graciously hosted the Pelican sailors and demonstrated the process of assembling a spinnaker from start to finish. He generously donated the completed spinnaker as a prize, to be awarded at the Pelican State Championships in January.

As is tradition, the final afternoon featured a mini-regatta where the sailors put their newly-honed skills to the test. Miles and Ophelia performed admirably, finishing 2nd, 4th, 1st and 1st in their races, securing the overall win for the day. It was an excellent result for the duo in their first regatta as a team.

Their older sister, Lailah, was also active throughout the event, alternating between boats to assist sailors who were short on crew or in need of a break.

Now, all three SoPYC Pelican sailors are eagerly anticipating their next challenge at the Pelican State Championships in January, hosted by GBYC. A big thank you to the Pelican Sailing Association for organizing another fantastic Pelican Power Up!
