The CPYA State Heat, round 8, was hosted by Claremont Yacht Club on Saturday. A fleet of 9 boats representing SoPYC were among the 31 competing boats, representing 7 clubs. There were 11 checked marks on the course.
With our own Brian Smith as the Race Officer for the day, results were ready to announce by 6.30pm to the competitors and guests at the post-event dinner.
The best of Claremont Yacht Club’s hospitality was on show, with a delicious buffet served to members and guests, including the tempting dessert table covered with Corica Pastries. The famous Corica Strudels were awarded to the handicap winners who were present, with the remaining drawn for lucky raffle ticket holders. Some winners were more excited about winning a strudel than a pennant.
The results saw RFBYC boat Azure win the least points and first place with a score of 5. PC Guy Skinner and Fiona Lyons were the best of our fleet in 2nd place with a score of 6 points lost, continuing Thanet’s impressive form this season with podium finishes in the last 3 heats. Congratulations Fiona Lyons for continuing Richards Evans navigating legacy onboard Thanet.
In 3rd place on a count-back from 4 boats, all scoring 7 points was Out On Business, Darryl Wilkes and John Spanos, taking on the counting duties from Mary Vukovic. Mary and Darryl have missed most of the season travelling to the top end. In Heat 7, Darryl was 23rd in the fleet. When I texted Darryl my congratulations on his score, he was in disbelief wondering if I had messaged him in error. Dalusional was another of the teams scoring 7 points coming in 5th place, on the countback. Congratulations to our winners.
Awarding the weekly Bent Prop $100 voucher, sponsored by Chris Pearsons Wilson Marine is a toss-up. A quick scan of the results reveals 2 of our fleet were missing minutes! Morrie Stevens with Tony Walther as Navigator for the day, onboard Wolfpack, started 1 minute early scoring 50 seconds on the first 2 marks, before realising and getting back on track. Ian Staple’s navigator onboard Illusion lost a minute in the timing on the long, 14 min 27sec. run from Lucky Bay back to Nedlands. With big scores of 2 60’s, a 62 and 59 in the last few marks, adding an extra 243 instead of just 3 points to Illusion’s score!
